Pitching a project to palabra
¡Hola, colega! So you want to pitch us your work. Great, thank you!
Here’s what you need to know:
What is our main goal?
palabra is the journalism multiplatform focused on promoting the talent of freelance members of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), while supporting them with competitive rates, depending on each project.
Who can collaborate with us?
You must be a journalist and/or storyteller with proven professional standards, confirmed sources, and the ability to fact-check your submission before publication.
Please be mindful that we work exclusively with freelancers who are NAHJ members.
College student projects may be considered under approval of their schools or instructors.
Which kind of stories and formats do we want?
We love seeing innovation and originality in journalism — no matter the medium or format.
While we welcome all formats, we’re especially interested in multimedia storytellers who work across text, photography, audio, video, and social media.
We do not publish breaking news. Instead, we focus on evergreen stories — pieces with depth, impact, and lasting relevance.
We welcome pitches across all beats and topics, with a strong preference for fresh angles and compelling storytelling, ideally (but not exclusively) connected to the Latino community.
We proudly support stories in English, Spanish, or both.
Do you have a powerful story to tell?
Would you like to shine a light on astonishing characters, surprising places, or mind-blowing situations?
Do you have provocative, emotive, reflective, and well-founded stories or columns?
Do you take eye-opening photos, photo essays, or videos with their own visual narrative?
Or maybe you like storytelling through comics, animations, or social media?
If so, we’d love to hear from you. Join us!
Who selects the work?
Content is selected, coordinated, and supervised by palabra’s co-managing editors and/or an advisory board working with palabra.
How can I submit a pitch?
You can submit pitches by emailing us at info_palabra@nahj.org or by using the form attached at the end.
Make sure to include your name, quick background reference, working title, synopsis, media used, treatment, and deadlines.
A good pitch can sell the story within a few lines. Brevity is highly appreciated!
When do I know if my pitch was selected?
Due to the high volume of submissions, we may not be able to respond immediately, so please bear with us!
If your pitch gets selected or if we have follow-up questions, we will notify you by email no later than three weeks after your submission.
